Working Play Date

Clara and I met because our kids go to the same school. One way we get work done during the holidays is organising a Working Play Date.

We get together at either my house or hers and take our laptop and anything else we need. We hook ourselves up to the wireless Internet and get to work while our kids have a wonderful time playing together.

To keep them occupied, there are games and toys. Sometimes we are organised enough to hire some bigger toys as a special treat for the day. We also have a ready supply of fruit and dry biscuits and water bottles so the kids can nibble as they get hungry. We also have lunch ready and eat together giving us all a break.

It's amazing how much work we get done on these days, and the kids love it too as they have someone to play with and a new set of toys.

We take turns hosting the play date. Sometimes Natalie joins us too, though she finds it a bit harder to work when the kids are around given the nature of her business. It's a bit hard drafting Santa letters when there are kids around who are likely to read over her shoulder…

These working play dates are great fun for all of us. The biggest benefit to our businesses as we get a lot of work done. The biggest benefit to our kids is that we can then take days off to spend quality time with our kids on days we aren't working.

Today is one of our play date days, so I'd better get back to work.

Saying thank you for clients

As I said in my introduction post, most of my design clients have come from referrals from friends, actually, mostly from Clara…

Whenever they refer someone to me for design work, I like to send a little gift to say thank you to them.

I try and give something useful to them, or something that they will enjoy. It does help that I know Clara very well! Some referrals have come from people I don't know quite so well. Lately I've been buying small boxes of chocolates to send them.

With each gift, I include a hand written card to say thank you. I aim to personalise the message as much as I can.

I know these gifts are appreciated, and are often unexpected. They don't cost me much, but go a long way to build relationships. I also know that this will help if ever I decide to run this business full time.

Until next time, Quinn.

Quinn – popping by to say hello

Good morning all. My name is Quinn and I'm a graphic designer.

It all started with Clara asking me to do a logo and graphics for her market, and then getting caught up helping Natalie with designing templates for her Santa letters. I registered an ABN and take on jobs from time to time. Many of these have come as referrals from Clara with some of her stall holders needing a new logo or advertising material.

I don't know if I want to turn this in to a full time business. Life is pretty busy juggling kids and housework and everything else that comes with being a single parent… Mind you, I'd much rather be working from home than in a job outside home. My youngest is six, so this is a prospect I'll be facing very soon. Any advice would be welcome.

No idea why Donna invited me to be part of this blog, other than her saying that my story is the classic case of an Accidental WAHM in that I still haven't set up a business, as such.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to sharing my journey and learning off everyone here.

I have no idea how to sign off a blog post, so I'll just say see you later.

Quinn
