Christmas Windows

I'm excited by the topic this week, and think I was one of the first to sign up! I love Christmas, and especially the Myer Christmas Windows.

Last year, they inspired me to create Christmas windows for my business. I don't have a shop front, at least not in the traditional sense. My website is my shop front, so I created an image out of nappies and made it look like a Christmas tree, complete with tinsel and a star on top. It looked great and gave my site a Christmas feel.

I'm in the process of designing something different for this year. I haven't quite decided what it will look like yet, but it's coming together. This year, I plan to print out some of the photo's and use them as Christmas cards too.

My plan is to create a Christmas window image every year and have my customers looking forward to the reveal, much like the Myer Christmas Windows bring excitement to Melbourne.

I you do a Christmas window for your business, I would love to see what you've done. Please share your links in the comments.

Get a cleaner

When Donna put me down for a time management tip, I was a bit scared, but then it hit me. The biggest thing I do to manage my time is to have a cleaner!

I have a preschooler and a baby, and run a business. It is very hard to fit it all in, along with cooking, cleaning, and everything else I have to do in a week. I didn't want to put my kids in daycare, so opted for a cleaner.

I found a local uni student who comes in for an hour and a bit. We pay $50 a week for her to come and she cleans the toilet, bathroom, vacuums, and does anything else she can fit in that time. All we have to do is make sure the house is tidy so she can clean.

This has been fantastic for me as it gives me more time to play with the kids and work on my business and we still have a nice clean house, which is great as my little man is crawling and getting in to everything!

I hope this tip is useful for you.

Including receipts with orders

I'm so excited to write my first post for this blog. OK, so technically it's my second post… but this is my first business tip, and it's about money.

One thing that I do in my business is include a receipt with every order I send out. I know my online shop has a function that emails a receipt to the customer when they pay for their order, but I like to include a paper receipt too.

This helps me when I am packing orders as I print out a copy of the receipt and tick it off as I pack each parcel. This helps me and the customer know that everything they have ordered is in the package.

On my receipt template, I include a nice message thanking customers for their order. This helps with customer service as often the only contact I have with customers is through the Internet.

If the order is being sent as a gift, I will send a copy of the receipt in the mail to the person who ordered the gift. This is sent out at the same time as the package with a note confirming the package was sent that day. Again, I know my online shop sends out an automatic confirmation when I tick the box, but having something in the mail is a bit special. I also sometimes include a voucher or something from one of my alliance partners (but that is a topic for another post).

There was one day when I thought I'd sent all packages, and then found a receipt that had slipped off my packing table! Finding the receipt let me know that all packages hadn't been done and the customers order was sent first thing the next day and it wasn't forgotten.

The receipts are generated through Quickbooks, my accounting software. By including a print out of them, I also know that all my orders have been entered into the package.

Erica – Finally joining in!

Hi, I'm Erica. I run a business selling Modern Cloth Nappies, or MCNs. Basically, they are cloth nappies that are in the shape of disposable nappies. I sell mostly online through my website, though I also attend local baby shows and am working my way up to get a stand at the big baby shows.

This all started when my daughter was born and I became hooked on MCNs, obsessed my hubby would say. We saved the baby bonus when she was born and used it to start my business when I was expecting our son. The business launched not long after he was born. The main aim was to fund my obsession!! We've recently celebrated the first birthday of my business and our son. Exciting times.

I'm still new in business, but hope I have something to share that can help other WAHMs… I was excited when Amy introduced me to Donna and she invited me to join in here. It's also challenging with two preschoolers and a business, but I'll post when I can.

Looking forward to posting again soon.

Love, Erica.
