Countdown to Christmas

Donna here, introducing our next topic – Christmas!

Can you believe how quickly this year has gone? I can't. I know there are Christmas decorations up in the shops and people are already starting to promote Christmas gifts. We may be getting in a bit late to help you with Christmas promotions for your business, but this week we will start sharing some Christmas tips to help you.

We hope these ideas are useful to you, even if it's not for this year, it could be for next year. Then again, with some of these ideas, it's not too late, especially as it's still the end of October…

All the best with your Christmas promotions.

Time for time

Donna here again, introducing our topic of the week. I hope you all enjoyed our Money Tips and found them useful. Also welcome Rani who joined in for the first time yesterday. She teaches my kids the piano and I'm sure she has some great tips to share.

In our launch giveaway, most people commented that time was a big issue for them. So we've put together some of our tips on how we manage to run our businesses and look after families. I hope you all find them useful.

We are also preparing our Christmas tips. If you have a look at Natalie's posts you'll see a count down ticker to Christmas, it's sooner than you think! If you have any suggestions for future topics, please let us know. We have a really long list, and we want to make sure we address the issues that are most important to you.

I hope you enjoy the time tips this week.

It’s all about the money…

Hi Everyone, Donna here again.

Our School Holiday series of posts was incredibly popular, so we've taken a week out to plan some further themes. We are open to ideas, so please let us know what topics you are interested in. We will also start having posts during the week and on Sunday I will introduce the theme for the week. I also have a few new WAHMs who want to join in and they will come by on a Saturday to introduce themselves.

To start with, I've asked some of our group to share some of their money tips. Please remember that these are just things that we have done and don't replace professional advice from an accountant.

We hope that you find out tips helpful in your businesses. If you have any ideas for future topics, please let me know.

It’s the start of the school holidays…

Hi everyone, Donna here.

This week marks the start of the Victorian school holidays. For many WAHMs, this is a challenging time. Over the next 2 weeks, I've asked my fellow bloggers to share some of the ways they manage their business over the school holidays.

I know that back when I was running my business, before it was sold, I would try and get my boys to help me… the only problem was that the boys didn't want to have anything to do with the sparkly pink items I was selling!

As you will see over the coming fortnight, your business doesn't have to grind to a standstill while the kids are home from school.

I hope you will enjoy these posts and they will help you with your business and the school holidays.

Why did I close my business?

I hope you've enjoyed meeting my work at home friends. They will be contributing their stories over the coming weeks and months. A few more will be coming by, but I thought I'd share some of my story.

I ran a business for nearly four years, and it got to the stage where my heart just wasn't in it any more. I was missing Saturday sport with my sons as I was at markets, as well as getting so busy that I wasn't around as much as I wanted to be. I faced a tough decision – do I close the business, try and change things so I'm excited about it again, or try and sell it?

For months I was going back and forward, talking with friends and family trying to work out what to do next. A friend recommended an amazing business broker. She sat down with me and helped me work out what I wanted to do.

This business was my fourth baby, after my three boys, I didn't want to see it close down, and my broker identified that there was something to sell – the website was getting great traffic and sales, I had an active Facebook page with over 3,000 likes, and had some great products that I was creating and selling, there was also a full program of markets with regulars who would come and buy from my stand. In short, there was a business to sell. It wasn't huge, however it had some potential for the right person to take it and grow. I knew that I wasn't the right person – I was ready for a new challenge.

Getting it all ready to sell was tough. My broker helped find a buyer and negotiated a great price for me (but that's another post).

If you have got to the stage where you have lost the passion for your business, consider selling it instead of just closing it down.

Welcome to Accidental WAHM

Welcome to Accidental WAHMHi and welcome. My name is Donna and I was a Work at Home Mum (WAHM) until just before Christmas last year. I ran a business making pretty things for girls. This all started after my third son turned one and I needed a bit of pink in my life.

My little man entered Prep this year and my oldest boy started High School. As this milestone was nearing, I was getting tired of my business. It was all getting overwhelming and a wonderful business broker worked with me so I could sell my business.

Over the last nine months I've been enjoying being a stay at home Mum (SAHM) and being involved in reading with the Prep kids and embarrassing my Year 7 son. Added to this, I've also been enjoying taking the boys to Saturday morning sport.

All this time on my hands has got my head spinning. I've put together a group of work at home Mums and one brave Dad, to come and blog here with me. We will all share our business journeys and the lessons we have learned or are learning along the way.

We're still trying to work out how all this works. The template that is on this blog now is temporary. A new template is being created by the amazing team at typengraphics studios and will be up in a couple of weeks. I can't wait.

So, I hope, and we all hope, that you will enjoy the business tips we will share here. The next little while, everyone will pop in and introduce yourself. I hope you'll welcome them warmly and enjoy following their journeys as well as mine – once I work out what I'm going to do next.

Oh, and when the new template is up, we'll have a wonderful giveaway for our readers, so watch this space…
