Sending Christmas Cards

My tip about Christmas is to do with sending Christmas cards. I make a point of sending hand written Christmas cards to my stall holders, suppliers and other supporters. Often I wonder what has possessed me to do this, however I know the recipients appreciate it and it helps grow my business.

The list is constantly growing, so I make sure I get ready early. I either buy them in the Boxing Day sales or buy charity cards. I have a list of people I want to send cards to, and I start writing them about now. Every night I just do a few cards. Writing them this way saves my hand, and it gets them all done. They aren't posted until the start of December at the earliest, usually sent around the second week.

To further save money, I make sure they all have "Card Only" written on them so I can get cheaper postage.

I prefer sending (and receiving) cards in the mail than an email. It's that little bit special.

List of jobs for the kids…

I make a point of planning the markets around the school holidays, so that I don't have any last minute preparations that need to be done while the kids are off school, although there are still jobs to be done.

It doesn't take long for the kids to get bored and start fighting!

To combat this, I compile a list of jobs the kids can do, from housework to work to help my business. If it's a business task, they can earn some pocket money! The list changes depending on what is happening, however it can include:

  • stuffing envelopes for a mail out to stall holders & visitors
  • sticking address labels on promotional postcards
  • tidying out their toys
  • shredding drafts and paperwork that does not need to be kept
  • filing – I do have to be clear where each item goes
  • checking that my market tool box is restocked

I write the jobs up on a piece of butchers paper and stick it to the wall. Whenever the kids start fighting or complaining they are bored, I invite them to do one or more of the jobs on the list To make sure that they business keeps running, I make sure that none of these jobs are business critical. If the job is able to earn them some pocket money, I mark them with a dollar sign. Whatever they earn is recorded and paid out at the end of each week of the school holidays.

I've found this works best during the June/July school holidays as the kids want to hit the toy sales… but it can work any time the kids want to spend some cash. This week, the incentive is having some money to spend when we go to the Melbourne Show later this week.

Running a business while sick…

We have all been sick, especially me. We've just had a run of nasty colds. As a work at home Mum, I just have to keep going… I've also found that I tend to get a cold after market weekends.

It's hard to keep going, but there are emails to answer, money to bank, websites to be updated, and so on, and not to mention looking after the kids and keeping the house running.

There are a few things I do to keep everything going includes:

  • having some quick and easy meals in the freezer and pantry, such as pies, sausages, leftovers, tinned soup. This way we can still have a decent dinner when I don't feel like cooking.
  • let clients know that I'm unwell, especially if they are waiting on something from me.
  • prioritise business tasks so I do what absolutely needs doing, and the things that can wait until I'm feeling better will wait.
  • have a nap before the kids come home from school if possible.
  • take advantage of after school care if I'm really unwell.

I'm also finding that I need help generally with administration and the behind the scenes running of my market as well as on market day, and I know this will also help when I'm sick. It's on my list to look at options for help…

What do you to manage your business when you are ill?

A tired hello from Clara

Hi Everyone, I'm Clara. I run a series of quality hand-made markets. We had one yesterday, which is why I'm so tired.

The markets were originally going to be a one off, inspired by a really bad market that I attended. It went quite well and the stall holders as well as the customers kept asking when the next one would be, and now they are a monthly event.

I have two children and an amazing husband. They all pitch in and help on market day as well as helping with the applications. Some days they are more help than others, though.

This seems like a fun project and I'm looking forward to sharing with you, though I need to recover from the latest market…

Chat soon, I'm heading back to bed…
